Thursday a terrible tragedy happened when an attack in Chattanooga killed four Marines and a sailor. Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of the victims, all service members in harm's way, the city of Chattanooga, and our Hamilton County Young Democrats. Tennessee Democratic Party Chair Mary Mancini issued a statement following the attack.
We keep Chattanooga and all those above in our hearts. We will stand strong as Tennessee together with Chattanooga, and with our nation.
Tennessee Young Democrats President London Lamar on Supreme Court’s historic ruling on Gay Marriage
Memphis, Tenn. (June 26, 2015) – Tennessee Young Democrats President London Lamar released the following statement on today’s 5-4 ruling by the U. S. Supreme Court on marriage equality.
As President of the Tennessee Young Democrats, it is with great pride, excitement, and humility that I congratulate the LGBTQ community on a major accomplishment. Today, our party could not be more proud of our country.
The basic principles of the Democratic Party are rooted in equality and love. Today, the Supreme Court of the United States renewed hope that our values and the work we undertake produces change.
Growing up learning about the Civil Rights Movement and how African Americans fought for change, taught me that advocacy is not easy but it is necessary; even when unpopular. For the last couple of years, I have applied those principles to advocating for marriage equality side by side with my LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Their courage and dedication to the cause of marriage equality is commendable. It is a prime example of what advocating for civil rights, HUMAN rights, symbolizes and takes.
The Tennessee Young Democrats shares this victory with you and will continue to stand by your side as we continue the fight for civil rights, equality, and democratic issues.
Congratulations and let us continue to make history!
